Local journalists will be engaged for the next two weeks as a result of an initiative of the University of Guyana’s Centre for Communication Studies (CCS) to host a workshop for local print media.
The programme commences tomorrow in the Eddie Rodway Foyer of the Theatre Guild of Guyana. Sessions will continue each day except on weekends until July 23. They will be facilitated by renowned journalist of the Ohio University, Allan Miller, the Managing Editor of the Columbus Dispatch, one of Ohio’s largest news agencies. He is also a lecturer in Journalism.
The CCS had conducted two surveys over the past two years. These underlined the need for training in certain areas. Consequently, the veteran newsman will work with local journalists, editors and managers to foster improvement in several crucial areas including photojournalism, layout and design, on-line journalism, investigative reporting and dealing with sensitive issues. The workshop will also look at managing news entities along with other editorial concerns.
Mr. Miller, an ardent travel writer, will also tour Guyana’s major historical and environmental sites with a view to filing features on our rich heritage. He will deliver a public lecture titled ‘The Media is Dead’ which focuses on the changing role of the media on the global landscape. This lecture will take place on Wednesday, July 21, also at the Theatre Guild from 17:00-21:00hrs.
Mr. Miller is the holder of a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in journalism from Ohio University, and currently is managing editor for The Columbus Dispatch. He also teaches journalism at Denison University, a liberal arts college in Granville, Ohio.
He is the former president of the Associated Press Society of Ohio, and is on the board of the National Associated Press Managing Editors Association. This astute journalist is also a member of the professional advisory board for the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University.
He started his journalistic career at the metro daily as a reporter in 1984 and has covered regional news, urban affairs, Columbus City Hall and higher education among others. He was an assistant city editor, state editor and assistant managing editor before assuming the portfolio of managing editor in 2004.
