Dear Mr. Corbin,
Thank you for your service to the people of Guyana and to the Nation.
Having said this, I add my voice to an increasing number of concerned Guyanese for you to gracefully step down as Party Leader, and enthusiastically support another member of your executive who can lead the party to victory in 2011.
Just look around you Mr. Corbin, our country is in a deplorable state; the economy is in a mess; unemployment is at an unacceptable high, the Value Added Tax (VAT) has created more hardship for consumers; workers’ wages are below the cost of living; the crime rate is high and totally out of control; Illegal drugs and firearms are on the increase and causing death and the destruction of our youth; corruption in government has become the norm; the once beautiful ‘Garden City’ of Georgetown, is littered with garbage and derelict buildings; more children are begging on the streets, and the people are crying out for help.
They look to the opposition to stop the bleeding, but there is none. Sadly, the heavy lifting has been left to the independent media, especially Kaieteur News and Stabroek News, to expose all the corruption and wasteful spending of taxpayers’ money by the Jagdeo Administration.
As Leader of the Opposition, your silence and inaction has caused the PPP/C political machinery to grow bolder and more aggressive, and may have resulted in the birth of another political party: Alliance For Change (AFC).
Your two attempts to become President were rejected by the electorate, and they will likely do so again.
Your decision not to be your party’s Presidential Candidate in 2011 is a good one, but does not go far enough to instill confidence in the membership of the PNCR and the few independent voters out there.
I urge you Sir, to relinquish your position as Political Leader of your Party to allow the next Presidential Candidate of the PNCR the freedom to properly plan and execute a winning strategy to take back this country from the PPPC oppressors, without fear of creating personality conflicts that could lead to a division within your Party.
It is true that you were recently re-elected as your Party’s Politic Leader, and quitting now may appear to some supporters that you’re neglecting your responsibilities; but as my favourite actor: Clint Eastwood of Dirty Harry fame would say, “Man must know his limitations.”
Mr. Corbin, you have not been ineffective at planning successful political campaigns, for the PPP/C is still in power after 18 years, and if they win again, we will likely be having this same discussion in the year 2016.
As Leader of the Opposition, you have failed to prevent a government spending out of control; failed to expose secretive deals by the Government to invest taxpayers’ money in private enterprises; and failed to apply enough pressure that would force the Government to be transparent and accountable to the people of Guyana.
I sincerely hope that the fat salary and wonderful incentives you now enjoy as Leader of the Opposition, is not the reason for you wanting to stay on as Political Leader of the PNCR.
This would be a total betrayal of the people who believe in your love of country, and it would represent a selfish and defeatist approach to the General Elections of 2011.
But whatever your reason, the welfare of all Guyanese and the prosperity of a nation rest in your hands, and your ability to make the right decision.
Harry Gill
