Mother’s hope vindicated

Indra Persaud-Moonadai refused to believe that her missing 17-year-old son was dead.

Mikey Moonadai, who left home last Diwali to work at Mahdia, had called his family on New Year’s Day 2010, and had told them he would be home for the Easter Holidays. They never heard from the teenager again.

Desperate for news of her son, Indra launched an investigation, calling on the police, friends, relatives and anyone whom she knew or heard of, that had come to the city from the hinterland location.

First, she was told that Mikey had died of malaria and had been buried. But she still had hopes of finding him alive.

A few weeks later, she was told that he had been murdered.

Indra still felt that her son was alive and well. Not waiting for the police to respond to her report, she continued talking to persons working in the interior.

As soon as she heard of someone who had just come from the area where she heard that her son had been working, the woman would be off to talk to the person asking for news of her son.

Her faith has finally paid off. Mikey is alive and well. He spoke to his mother on Friday by telephone. He had been working at Konawaruk and had lost her number so he had been unable to make contact with her, he said.

Mikey is expected to be reunited with his mother in the near future, when he will explain in detail to her, what really happened.
