Investigators await injured rank’s recovery

On April 15, last, Police rank Sherwyn Richardson, was struck down while manning a road block aback of the Botanical Gardens.
Since the incident the person responsible has been released on station bail without being charged as Richardson remains unresponsive and bedridden.
When contacted yesterday, Traffic Chief Neil Semple, said that the investigation into the incident remains open as they await a statement from Richardson.
In the meantime, Richardson who was once an active young man carrying on daily patrols in and around the city now requires special full time care at Wismar Hospital.
Currently, his mother, who is a single parent, is now left to deal with his medical bills which entail finding a speech therapist among other things.
To date, the Guyana Police which Richardson has served for more than seven years has done nothing financially for the man’s relatives, they say.
This incident has raised questions in the minds of many as to what benefits are in place for ranks of the force who somehow get injured while on duty.
Relatives of the seriously injured man said as it is now, they are only receiving Richardson’s salary.
On April 15 last, Richardson, 29, who was stationed at the Tactical Services Unit, was in the company of his colleagues manning a roadblock when a driver who was reportedly speeding slammed into him from behind, a police source said.
Kaieteur News understands that the driver in his defence is claiming that since the area where the roadblock was being conducted was dark he never saw the roadblock until it was too late.
By then, Richardson who was standing on the eastern side of the road was struck down and hurled several yards before the car came to a screeching halt.
The badly injured cop was picked up by his stunned colleagues and rushed to the hospital while the driver of the car was detained.
The driver was subsequently released on station bail. He has never contacted the family to offer support of any kind.
