Inmates to be charged for attempted arson

The inmates of the Georgetown Prisons who are said to be responsible for setting fire to a mattress in the ‘brick’ section of the Georgetown Prisons are expected in court sometime early next week.
A source close to the investigation told this newspaper that three inmates have since given statements to the police.
According to information received, one of the three persons implicated has since revealed to investigators that he saw two other inmates setting fire to the mattress.
In the meantime, the investigators are preparing a file for the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice.
On Thursday last, swift action by prison officials prevented what could have been a major catastrophe at the Georgetown Prisons.
Reports are that three inmates set alight a mattress in the facility, resulting in some unrest in the country’s most overcrowded jail. After an alarm was raised, the fire service was summoned to the area, but by then everything was under control.
There was no report of injury but this newspaper was told that the prisoners lit the mattress in the “brick” section of the jail to protest their prolonged incarceration.
Other prisoners raised an alarm and the fire service and police responded promptly to extinguish the blaze and ensure that there was no major disturbance or escape attempt.
