A handful of spectators watched as Georgetown Flex Check barely squeezed past East Coast Flex Test and favourites Upper Corentyne Free Weekend got past New Amsterdam Free Credit in two low-key semi-finals of the Digicel National Summer Splash 20/20 cricket competition at the Guyana National Stadium on Friday.
The first semi-final was played in bright sunshine while the second game was played under lights but the atmosphere, like the cricket, was dull and lacked the vibrancy of the just concluded DJ Stress 20/20 Festival which included West Indies players from Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.
Ramnaresh Sarwan, who, once fully fit, is expected to Skipper Guyana in the Regional 20/20 tournament was expected to return to Guyana today after seeking medical treatment overseas and was not available for the City side.
Georgetown were also without Test great Shiv Chanderpaul who opted to play for his English County and will be unavailable for the Regional 20/20 after also opting out for the inaugural regional 20/20 competition which Guyana won in 2006.
Narsingh Deonarine, who hit the million dollar six in the 2006 final against Trinidad and Tobago was also missing from the Upper Corentyne side due to personal commitments in the USA. He is expected to be available for the regional 20/20 which concludes with the final on August 1 in Trinidad.
The fun, frolic and all-day party compensates for the general lack of style, poise, grace and elegance in most 20/20 smash-ups but on Friday, even for the after-work game which commenced at 19:00hrs, there was not a single person in the Party stand and very few in the other stands.
In the middle, former Test player Ryan Ramdass (29) and Krishna Arjune (21) added 33 in 4.1 overs for East Coast against Georgetown but although Zaheer Mohamed (19) and Wasim Haslim (18) offered token resistance, the vast difference in experience between the two sides was glaring and East Coast never managed to score quickly after the openers departed and could only reach 110-7 off their 20 overs. East Coast opted to use the same team that had brought them to the ‘final four’ and Lennox Cush, Gajanand Singh and Paul Wintz were not selected as the transfer system was not used.
Utility player Deon Ferrier continues to show he is one of the more passionate and fit players well suited for 20/20s and took 3-17 with his off-spin for the city side who stuttered to the small target even with the help of some ordinary fielding and a crucial dropped catch in the 18th over with the game in the balance.
Skipper Leon Johnson ended the match with a six and a four in his unbeaten 51 as his team reached 114-2 in 19.3 overs but the former West Indies ODI left-hander never suggested he was capable of taking the bowling apart on a slow track and fast outfield.
Chris Barnwell and Trevon Griffith both departed when well set on 24 each as spinner Mohamed (0-16 from 4 overs) and Videsh Lall (0-17 from 4) kept the shackles on the batsmen while National Footballer and former Guyana under-19 off-spinner Clive Andries showed he was still a very competent bowler.
As expected, Upper Corentyne whipped their ‘Berbice B side’ by 8 wickets after reaching 99-2 from 16.1 overs replying to New Amsterdam’s 98-7 off 20 overs.
Football goalkeeper Keith Fraser, who hit Davindra Bishoo for one of the biggest sixes in the tournament in his cameo 20, was assisted by 27 from former National youth Captain Eugene La Fleur and 18 from Riad Ali in New Amsterdam’s innings.
Sewnarine Chattergoon’s leg spin took 2-5 from 4 overs while Bishoo and pacer Michael Newland had 2-19 each.Richard Ramdeen top scored with 41 while Devon Clements made an unbeaten 37 in Upper Corentyne’s reply.
The Final was scheduled for last night at the same venue.
