Detectives yesterday visited pathologist Dr. Vivekanand Bridgemohan to discuss his findings in the autopsy of Assistant Superintendant Ivelaw Murray.
A source said that the senior detective officers from Georgetown spoke extensively with Dr. Bridgemohan in an attempt to ascertain whether they were dealing with a suicide or murder.
Kaieteur News understands that the ranks are to continue their discussions with the pathologist today.
The development came after Dr. Bridgemohan’s autopsy revealed that the 32-year-old Murray’s body bore two gunshot wounds—one beneath the jaw that exited near his eyebrows, and another that pierced one temple and exited the other.
The cause of death was shock and hemorrhage due to laceration of the brain.
The opinion of some medical experts is that the severity of either wound would have caused Murray to be unable to fire his service revolver a second time. However, others suggested that he might have managed to shoot himself in the temple after shooting himself under the chin.
The presence of the senior detectives appears to contradict Commander Steve Merai’s statement that police are still treating Murray’s death as a suicide.
Some police sources have been critical of some aspects of the investigation. They noted that investigators had apparently decided from the outset that the case was closed.
They had therefore made no attempt to bag Murray’s hands so that they could be checked for gunpowder residue.
The sources also opined that all of the ranks who were on duty on the fateful day should have been checked for traces of gunpowder residue.
Police said that they had received reports that Murray and Shepherd were heard arguing in the barrack-room shortly before Shepherd was slain.
According to the police, Murray hurriedly left the Springlands Police Station after the constable was shot. He was subsequently found dead in his home.
Murray’s mother, Jenitta Daniels, told Kaieteur News that police had shown her a note, which they said was found in his house.
The note allegedly said: ‘Mommy, I love you, I am sorry.’
Someone had drawn a smiling face and another weeping face on the note.
The woman and her husband, retired Senior Supt Ivan Daniels, are convinced that their son did not write the note or take his own life.
They are prepared to seek the opinion of a second pathologist, with a view of proving that he was the victim of foul play.
