…use peas, beans in the meantime, says New GMC
The New Guyana Marketing Corporation (New GMC) yesterday urged consumers to consider using alternative sources of meat and protein in their diet until the supply and price of chicken return to normalcy.
At a meeting held in the boardroom of the Ministry of Agriculture on July 2, the Guyana Poultry Producers’ Association and other stakeholders of industry stated that there is adequate production in pens at the moment and based on projections, the supply and price of chicken will return to normalcy within six weeks.
Consumers should consider alternative types of meat including beef, pork and fish, the entity said yesterday.
Persons who do not consume different types of meat are advised to consume pulses, New GMC said.
“Pulses, legumes and dhals (split pulses) are cheaper sources of proteins when compared to the animal sources.
These include black-eye peas, channa, minica #4 (red peas), kidney beans, and split peas.”
The Corporation noted that pulses are rich in protein, carbohydrate and fibre, and low in fat which is mostly of the unsaturated kind. They are also important sources of some B Vitamins, also, the statement noted.
“Research has shown that regular consumption of fish which are high in omega-3 fatty acids can reduce the risk of various diseases and disorders such as cancer, arthritis, high blood pressure, strokes and heart disease.
“Eating fish every week reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke by reducing blood clots and inflammation, improving blood vessel elasticity, lowering blood pressure, lowering blood fats and boosting ‘good’ cholesterol.”
