The 17-year-old boy who was shot twice in the back by the police on Sunday afternoon, was yesterday taken into custody, minutes after doctors at the Georgetown Public Hospital deemed him fit enough to be discharged.
Osafo Johnson, of 707 East Ruimveldt, was reportedly shot just as he walked out of his front gate. But eyewitnesses to the shooting said that he had been fleeing from the police when he was shot.
Yesterday the police transported Johnson who appeared to be in pain to the Brickdam police lockups. The teen was only clad in his boxer shorts. There were bandages wrapped around his abdomen.
Relatives, yesterday, told Kaieteur News that they are puzzled as to why the doctors discharged the teen, who they say is still very sick. The teen’s relatives said that the police arrested the young boy shortly after midday yesterday.
“Osafo vomiting blood….up to when he was in the vehicle so I really cannot understand why the police is doing this,” said the relative.
The woman further explained that one doctor was insisting that the teen remain in the hospital, while two others said that he was fit for discharge.
According to the relative, Johnson was still receiving intravenous drips, and would receive oxygen periodically whenever he was having difficultly breathing.
The relative also said that Johnson had a tube inserted into him which was draining fluids from his body.
Kaieteur News was told that relatives at the hospital questioned the doctors, about the bullet which is still lodged in Johnson’s chest.
The relative said that the doctor told them that he knew “millions” of people who survived with bullets lodged in their bodies.
“So I turn and ask he if the bullet can’t poison Osafo…and he tell me the boy body gonna fight it off…”.
The police eventually transported Johnson to the police station, and reportedly refused to tell relatives why he was being arrested.
After the relatives’ cries where falling on deaf ears, they sought the services of attorney at law, Adrian Thompson.
The lawyer yesterday told Kaieteur News, that he was informed by the officer in charge at the Brickdam Police Station that Osafo had been discharged from the GPHC.
Thompson said that he raised certain concerns about his client’s condition and was told that they would have to seek advice from the Police Commissioner.
As the lawyer was speaking to reporters outside of the police station, Johnson continuously shouted to relatives that he couldn’t breathe properly.
The lawyer along with a close relatives of the teen rushed back into the police station.
Up to press time last night the teen was still in police custody.
On Sunday last the teen was shot by the police who said that they were hunting for wanted man “Cobra”.
The police are now saying that Johnson opened fire at them and was trying to escape.
According to the police, Johnson is wanted in connection with a murder and a series of armed robberies.
However, relatives vehemently denied that Johnson was part of a gang that is run by wanted man “Cobra”.
Relatives yesterday said that Johnson was being targeted. The police had arrested him three days prior to the shooting.
After spending 72 hours in police custody, they released him without any charge.
