– Fans urged to converge at Rahaman’s Park to witness event
While the talk of motor racing is actively in the air, Guyanese will have an opportunity to be part of a new experience today when they trek down to Rent-A-Tent Office at Rahaman’s Park, Houston where they could participate and witness the thrilling sport of Model Car Racing.
The sport which has been in existence for over 40 years in the Caribbean is co-ordinated by Trinidadian Peter de Montbrun, who himself has been involved in the sport for a similar length of time and who travels the Region organising events which usually culminates with a Caribbean Championship.
The sport which is played with cars being driven at a fast clip on a replica race track where competitors using a remote control device attempt to outdo each other over four races of 20 laps each with the first to complete the most being declared the winner.
According to de Montbrun, the sport is extremely popular in his native country and was declared as a National Sport through an Act that was passed in Parliament by the UNC Administration some years ago and even enjoys funding from the Government.
De Montbrun also disclosed that the sport is also being played in the schools in Trinidad and Tobago, while a number of national competitions are held each year in different sections of the country.
Speaking additionally about the game, de Montbrun said that the track is equipped with four lanes and each competitor is allowed to race on each lane during the four races in three categories namely the Raleigh for Suburus; Endurance Race for cars such as Mercedes Benz , SLR and McLaren and Formula 1 for McLaren and Mercedes Benz cars.
According to the co-ordinator, model car racing has a large following and he cited the 1972 World Championship which took place in England that saw over 4,000 persons participate with T&T being the only representative country from the Caribbean.
T&T then staged the Scalextric World Championships in 1976 which was the first event of that nature to be held anywhere in the Caribbean.
“Already we’ve staged a competition in Grenada and now we’re here in Guyana where two winners will join a similar amount from Grenada in Barbados next month for the Caribbean Series showdown,” de Montbrun informed.
He added that both the Grenadians and Guyanese expenses will be paid by the T&T Government including hotel accommodation, meals etc.
The competition today starts at 09:00 hrs and goes until 17:00 hrs and players will be competing in the following categories: Under-10 years, U-15 yrs, U-19 yrs, adults 19 yrs and over, Ladies Novices, Over-35 yrs and a Champion of Champions final.
The event continues tomorrow and will run from 09:00 hrs -13:00 hrs.
All are invited and there will be Nestle giveaways and lots of fun.
