Dear Editor,
The recent announcement by the Minister of Agriculture that they will drain the conservancy into the Demerara River instead of the Mahaica/Mahaicony creeks is rather troubling given the current flooding in the Grove/Diamond area.
One wonders if such an attempt by way of a dry run, or maybe I should say wet run instead, was attempted and this was responsible for the flood in the Grove/Diamond area? Especially since these areas do not normally flood. The reason for the recent flood in Grove/Diamond needs to be investigated to determine why it actually happened and should not be swept into the drains.
The East Coast of Demerara now bustles with activity. Large businesses are now established with billions spent on construction. One hopes that in construction, consideration was given to potential flooding. The East Coast of Demerara suffers from flooding on a more regular basis that the rest of the country. The residential areas like Oleander Gardens, Atlantic Gardens and Happy Acres are all developments that appear to sit in a basin. Without doing the necessary research, one is tempted to speculate that these areas may have once even been used as holding areas for water when the canals were high and the tide was in.
Happy Acres seem to be developing into a diplomatic community of sorts. A large number of foreign nationals live there. One hopes that they are cognisant of the potential for flooding. Should they be affected by flooding in large numbers, there goes another rotten image of Guyana to the rest of the world and so much for encouraging tourism.
