Guyana took first innings points from the Leeward Islands on the truncated opening session of the 2nd day of their 3-day first round TCL Regional under-19 cricket match in St Lucia yesterday and by the close were in a strong position to force a win today.
Malteenoes left-hander Kwame Crosse hit a solid debut unbeaten 74 as Guyana made 209 all out replying to the 141 made by the Islanders on the opening day after rain washed out almost half of the first session yesterday and the entire second session.
Behind by 68 runs, the Leewards were wobbling on the ropes at 73-5 by the close of play with former West Indies under-15 leg-spinner Amir Khan taking 3-25 to follow up his first innings effort of 4-49 on debut.
With a slim 5-run lead and half of their batting line-up gone, the Leewards will have to bat really well against the Guyanese spinners this morning on a track offering some assistance to the slow bowlers to prevent an outright defeat.
The Guyanese, hunting their first title at this level since 2008, could also have to contend with the weather in their victory hunt since more rain is forecast for St Lucia today.
The South Americans resumed the penultimate day on 133-6 with Crosse, a former Guyana under-15 Captain on 39 and fellow left-hander Andre Stoll on 27. Together they took Guyana to first innings points before left-arm pacer Stoll, who showed the ability to develop into a genuine all-rounder, fell for an important 37.
Rain at 11:07hrs sent the player scurrying off the field with Guyana on 161-7 and Crosse, who batted carefully in Chanderpaul-like fashion during the first hour yesterday, unbeaten 3 away from his 50.
After the entire second session was washed out, the Guyanese were eventually bowled out just leaving Crosse stranded 26 away from what would have been a well deserved ton.
Khan showed promising batting ability with 18 in a useful lower order stand with Crosse as Hayden Walsh Jnr took 3-51 and got support from Adelvin Phillips (2-30) and Tevin Osbourne (2-34).
The Leewards, in their second innings looked very uncertain once spin was introduced and although Darren Binta made a fighting 40 and Akeem Saunders got to 21, Khan and left-arm spinner Anthony Adams (1-19) confused the batsmen to put Guyana in control heading into the final day today hunting an outright win.
