– lad clutched live wire while retrieving football
Quick thinking by Charlene James, a manager at the Stain Masters Incorporated, yesterday afternoon, helped save the life of 12-year-old Ronell Roberts.
Reports reaching this newspaper state that the young boy was involved in a game of football at a playfield adjoining the Ministry of Health compound, at the easternmost end of Brickdam, when he came into contact with a live wire.
James who was en route to the Georgetown Hospital witnessed the incident, and quickly rendered assistance.
The woman yesterday told Kaieteur News that she was not supposed to be on Brickdam, but the driver made a wrong turn. She said that that wrong turn ended up being the right one as she was able to help save the young boy’s life.
James said the first thing she noticed was the children screaming on the playfield.
“They were just screaming and I immediately knew something was amiss.”
According to the woman she stopped the vehicle and quickly went to investigate what was going on.
James said she was confronted with a child lying and screaming, with a live electrical wire in his grasp.
The woman said that an older boy, who claimed to be Roberts’s elder brother, tried pulling him away, but was also shocked.
James shouted to the frantic lad who was visibly traumatized that he should knock the wire away with a piece of wood which was nearby. This was quickly done.
She then instructed one of the young boys present to attempt to perform CPR on Ronell Roberts, who was clearly in distress. He was rushed to Georgetown Hospital, where doctors quickly tried to stabilize his condition.
James further told Kaieteur News, that numerous attempts to contact the emergency team at the Guyana Power and Light proved futile.
A relative told this newspaper that Roberts, who is a member of the Santos football club, would practice at the playfield every day. According to the relative, the family was told that Roberts was going to retrieve a ball when he came into contact with the live wire.
Roberts, it was said, recently wrote the Secondary Schools Entrance Examinations and will be attending Freeburg Secondary come September.
Up to press time the child was in a stable condition at the Georgetown Hospital.
