Project Coordinator of the Mangrove Restoration Project Bissasar Chintamanie has warned that persons who destroy the trees will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Speaking to Kaieteur News yesterday, Chintamanie said that a public-spirited resident of Enmore had informed the team that someone had been cutting the trees in the Enmore area. A visit by Chintamanie late yesterday, confirmed the report by the resident who told him that the trees were cut by persons for use in their gardens and their yards.
The mangrove specialist reiterated his warning that persons caught will be fully prosecuted. He added that the Enmore police have been informed and are investigating the incident and the person(s) responsible will be formally charged.
Chintamanie added that the police will also be patrolling the areas where the trees are located to ensure that illegal cutting does not take place. He added also that an investigation will be launched into the cutting of some of the trees on the Western side of the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
Only last week the outreach team discovered that illegal cutting of the trees had taken place along the Essequibo River and in areas some miles away from Morashi.
