More controversy erupted yesterday after Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus granted bail to the tune of $250,000 to 60-year old Melanie Damishana resident Crafton Wright, who appeared yesterday at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court, charged with manslaughter.
Wright is accused of causing the death of 16-year old Leandrew Davis who was electrocuted last Monday while holding on to a fence around Wright’s yard.
The homeowner was arrested immediately after the incident and suffered physical abuse when angry residents converged on his premises.
It took the police several minutes to remove him from his yard which was under siege from the crowd.
Clad in a t-shirt and a blue track pants, Wright stood expressionless as his attorney Sandill Kissoon sought to gain him pre-trial liberty.
The court was told that Wright is a senior member of an Anglican church on the East Coast of Demerara and he has an unblemished record.
The court also heard that his house was badly damaged by angry residents and his stock stolen after he was taken into custody. In fact the police had to remain at his house overnight after the incident to protect it from further damage.
Wright’s vehicle was also damaged when it was overturned by angry residents.
Kaieteur News understands that Wright was advised to stay away from his property for a while.
Scores of irate residents, who were unaware that Wright was being placed before the court yesterday, belatedly turned up at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court, only to learn that the matter had already been dealt with and Wright was granted bail.
Needless to say their anger grew even more.
Meanwhile, the dead youth’s mother, Audrey Davis, arrived from the interior along with his father, Burton Ramsey, but they were too distraught to be interviewed by this newspaper.
Leandrew Davis was killed after he held on to Wright’s electrified fence while trying to retrieve a football that was kicked into the yard from the Melanie Damishana playfield.
