-shortlist sent to Olympic Association
By Edison Jefford
The Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) has named nine riders for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India in October, which some factions of the cycling community believe is not a true representation of the best cyclists in Guyana.
The nine cyclists who were reportedly identified include Geron Williams, Alonzo Greaves, Enzo Mathews, Darren Allen, Marlon Williams, Daniel Ramchurejee, Raymond Newton, Warren McKay and Robin Persaud.
The team was not officially released but Kaieteur Sport understands that those names were given to the Guyana Olympic Association as the intended touring squad. An official from the GCF has confirmed that the Olympic body is in possession of a team.
The official spoke to this newspaper on the ground of anonymity yesterday and indicated that it’s merely a shortlist, meaning that all the names submitted are not likely to travel after the question of having the best representative team was asked.
Some members of the cycling community, including a few cyclists, had expressed dissatisfaction over the appearance of some names on the list. They also requested ambiguity on the ground that they could be victimised for venting their concerns.
Some of the questions that were raised include what was the yardstick for selecting the team and why is there some amount of secrecy over the release of the national shortlisted team. This paper was made aware of some of the intricacies involved.
The well-placed source told us that the names had to be sent to GOA early to get them into what has been established as the Commonwealth system. As a result, the cyclists’ performances over the past six months were used as the criteria for selection.
The informant revealed that there is a Racing Committee set up to deal with record keeping and results etc. That committee identifies those who would have been performing and submits those names to the GCF General Council for final selection.
However, the coach and cyclists that spoke to this newspaper yesterday believed that there are a host of other cyclists that were completely overlooked for some who had not done much better than them over the six-month window used for selection.
