– residents seek to exploit value
Lindeners are looking to exploit over 4,000 acres of valuable heart of palm trees in the Kara Kara area.
According to George Marshall, a long-time logger/farmer from Kara Kara, the Euterpe oleracea tree from which palm hearts (hearts of palm) are harvested, has been a dominant tree in that area with no one seemingly aware of its economic value.
The disclosure was made Wednesday as agriculture officials visited a number of areas in Region 10, to check on drainage works.
According to Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud, the discovery of the trees could provide a source of livelihood for persons in Kara Kara.
The Guyana Forestry Commission has now been called in to work along with the residents and Amazon Caribbean, a company which has established a number of factories in Guyana to process the heart of palm.
Over the past month, following visits to the region, residents have been clamoring for drainage works and an excavator and pontoon were sent to dredge the Kara Kara Creek, an area that is home to a number of farmers.
The creek had been a source of complaints, with its channels silted from the bauxite mines.
There had been numerous complaints of floods and the excavator belonging to the government’s National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA), was redeployed to the area to carry out emergency works.
The Agriculture Ministry, according to Persaud, decided to carry out the works using the NDIA, since it would cost almost $30M if a contract had to be awarded.
Meanwhile, residents of Linden are also complaining of damaged infrastructure from bauxite mining in the area in proximity to Bosai. According to the residents, the roads are being used by the company’s heavy vehicles, causing extensive damage to the structures, with drainage systems being heavily affected.
Calls to Bosai yesterday afternoon went unanswered.
