– Anthony calls for benchmark athletics event
Most of the outstanding performers at the 2010 Hampton Track and Field Games in Trinidad and Tobago last weekend paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony, who expressed elation, yesterday at his Main Street Office.
In congratulating the athletes, Anthony told them that on the completion of the proposed state-of-the-art synthetic facility in West Demerara, the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) must be able to consider the establishment of a local benchmark event.
“We have to start planning programmes hand-in-hand with the construction of the facility so that when it is completed, we don’t have a big lull with getting competitions underway. Maybe it is a time when you will not be forced to go to Trinidad,” he said.
The minister believes that local athletes, from their recent performances, certainly have what it is going to take to challenge the rest of the Caribbean. He said there was no better way to judge that than performance, and the athletes have been performing.
“Your performances were excellent. I think this was one of your better years at the Games and I am proud of all of you. I hope you will continue to aspire to make Guyana proud and that you are going to take full advantage of the synthetic track,” Anthony urged.
In response, AAG President, Colin Boyce indicated to the minister that his association will begin to work on scheduling the necessary programmes to make use of the facility while also joining in congratulating the athletes from various clubs who did well. (Edison Jefford)
