The boxers scheduled to fight on the sixth edition of the ProAm Boxing extravaganza signed their respective contracts yesterday afternoon and while most of them chose to retain ominous silence, Pauline London took centre stage, verbally assaulting Debbie Tyson while promising that the fight would not past the third round.
It has been quite sometime since Tyson has entered the ring and even so she had lost that encounter against Sharon Ward. The loss kept her out of the ring but she stayed in the gym. Resolutely, at 16:00hrs every day Tyson would enter the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym practicing diligently for the first fight after her self imposed exile from the sport.
That fight, a four round encounter against London, is scheduled for Friday July 30 when the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and the National Communication Network (NCN) presents the sixth edition of the ProAm boxing extravaganza at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Yesterday afternoon, Tyson and London clashed in a verbal encounter that has set the stage for an entertaining contest on fight night. “Is long now I want Tyson to feel dis hand and from the time the bell knock I gon put it on pon she,” declared London in Tyson’s absence. She also had quite a lot more to say until Tyson walked in.
“Tell her what you have been telling us,” one of the media operatives said.
“I said that when I put this big hand pon she is knockout fo sure,” London boldly repeated.
“Pauline is always a talker,” retorted Tyson. “I am accustomed beating up men and women and as far as I am concerned she can hardly even walk much less stand up when I punch her.” The talking went on for another few minutes then Tyson blurted, “I am not ‘The Boom’ so don’t believe I will be that easy.”
“Okay if you are so confident let’s go for a winner take all,” proposed London. Tyson was not interested but nevertheless promised to ‘deal with London’s case.’
Shawn Pyle is currently preparing for a fight in Barbados for the CABOFE title but will oppose Mark Austin in a junior/welterweight contest on the card. Pyle has stated that he intends to use this bout as a warm up to the Barbados fight. He said that he has no intention of knocking out Austin since he needs the workout to round off his training for the Barbados fight. Austin feels offended by Pyle’s brashness and has promised to shut his mouth on fight night.
Edmond DeCleau and Troy Lewis were both at the function but while they both promised to come out victorious, refrained from any idle talk. However, shortly after the signing ceremony DeCleau said that he has been training very hard at the Young Lions’ Gym, Wismar Linden and he cannot even begin to imagine losing to Lewis.
Anthony Augustin was uncharacteristically quiet and all he said was “I will not underrate Best but at the end of the contest I will be the victor.”
Kurt Best is a mean fighter who also packs a punch. He stands some six feet plus but after three fights is still to register a win. However, two of his losses were against Trinidadian heavyweight, Kirston Manswell, the last being when the two met on the under card of the Pamela London/Margaret Salazar world title bout at the Splashmins Resort. He lost that bout but not before turning in a spirited performance that set the venue alight. Both men suffered losses to Mitchell Rogers and would want to use this bout to stake a claim for a return clash. This will be a fight between two strong punchers and it would be a surprise if the fight lasts the full distance.
There has been much talking at the signing ceremony. The various principals have all returned to their respective gyms to continue their preparations. Fans visiting the arena would pay a minimal $500 while those unable to be there may tune in to NCN Television for a blow by blow account of the bouts.
