The United States Embassy in Georgetown, along with all U.S Embassies worldwide, will begin, from July 13, charging new fees for consular services aside from visitor visas.
According to a release from the embassy, the fees cover the operating expenses for the 301 consular posts abroad, including Guyana; 23 domestic passport agencies, and other centers that provide consular services to both U.S and foreign citizens.
As is the case in all U.S. government user charges, services that directly benefit individuals, organizations, or groups are paid for by the users rather than by taxpayers in general.
Some fees are decreasing, including the cost of petitioning for an immigrant visa for an immediate relative from $355 to $330.
“First-time passport books for an adult will increase from $100 to $135, while the renewal cost will increase from $75 to $110. The total charge for a minor passport book (age 16 and under) will increase from $85 to $105.”
The Department will charge $82 to add pages to an existing passport, though frequent travelers renewing their passports can request a 52-page passport book at no additional cost.
Other changes include the fee for registering a birth of a U.S. Citizen, increasing from $65 to $100, and notarial services from $30 to $50 for the first service.
“All of the fee changes are the result of the most detailed and exhaustive cost of service study the Department of State has ever conducted, which was completed in June 2009. It gives greater clarity into actual costs and allows the Department to differentiate better between specific services. The new fees better reflect the cost of providing services.”
