For the third consecutive day, residents of Grove/Diamond were forced to cope with water in their homes and yards as the area remained flooded due to continuous rainfall and high tides that kept a main koker closed.
Yesterday morning, koker attendants were still to acquire a hose to attach to a pump that Government officials had deployed to the stricken communities.
The community of Grove appeared to be hardest hit with residents complaining of water-soaked furniture and electrical appliances that had malfunctioned.
Others also reported seeing caimans and snakes near their properties.
A resident of ‘Section ‘C’ Grove told Kaieteur News that two of his Dobermans had died because of their exposure to the waters. His bottom flat was still inundated yesterday.
His next door neighbour said that his yard is so badly flooded that he had been unable to go to work since the rains began.
At another flooded-out home, a woman who sells poultry said that the family had to raise their pens to prevent their chickens from dying.
She explained that when the rains started, the family bought sand and cement in an attempt to block off the patio. But the heavy rains forced them to abandon the effort, and water eventually seeped into their bedrooms and other parts of the home.
According to some of the residents, although some of the water receded on Sunday, they awoke yesterday to find that the water had risen again.
Others said that even without the heavy rainfall, some areas are always under water.
They speculated that some of the water was coming from the backlands surrounding the community. This was confirmed by koker attendants.
All of the residents expressed the view that not enough was being done by the Grove/Diamond NDC and Government entities to remedy the situation.
Attendants at the Grove/Diamond koker explained that high tides prevented them from keeping the koker open for longer periods.
They denied allegations that an attendant had caused the severe flooding by leaving the koker open at high tide.
“If that had happened, the whole area would have been washed out,” one man said.
They also said that a pump that had been deployed near the koker had worked for some hours before the hose burst.
