Bishop Juan Edghill, Head of the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC), has confirmed that the Commission is in receipt of the complaint issued by the Office of the President.
He said that the complaint has been passed on to the commissioners and the organization’s lawyers. According to Bishop Edghill the Commission intends to treat the complaint in the same way that it treats every other complaint it receives.
Bishop Edghill said that the ERC will not just be addressing the matter solely in the context of the Office of the President’s complaint. He noted that even before the complaint issued by the Office of the President, in a recently completed Strategic Assessment, a number of stakeholders brought the issue of racism in the media to the attention of the consultants.
He said that the ERC was called upon by their stakeholders to “be proactive in dealing with publishers concerning news items, articles and letters that were appearing in various sections of the media that were ‘stoking’ racism.”
To that end Edghill said that “the ERC is not ‘one-eyed’ and will not just be looking at Stabroek News and Kaieteur News but at all of the media houses.”
The complaint was, according to the Government Information Agency (GINA), sent to the Commission by the Office of the President. In the complaint it was alleged that as of late certain newspapers have published letters and articles which the Office of the President insists, violate the laws of Guyana and warrant the attention of the ERC.
In the complaint Dr. Roger Luncheon, Head of the Presidential Secretariat said of the letters and articles in question that “the authors have been promoting race-based politics and making vile allegations of racist behaviour against members of the government.”
The complaint contends that the two media houses are in violation of the Racial Hostility (Amendment) Act of 2002 and should the investigation reveal this to be the case then the two media houses could face possible prosecution.
