Relatives of 17 year old Osafo Johnson are still adamant that he was wrongfully shot by the police on Sunday afternoon.
The teen was reportedly shot in the back, by the lawmen, during an operation in the community.
A close relative of Johnson yesterday told Kaieteur News, that doctors are still closely monitoring his condition.
According to the relative the doctors have informed them that the bullet is not the problem but removing it is. The relative said that because of the location of the bullet, doctors are very skeptical.
“If his condition worsens the only choice they have would be removing it… but as it is right now they are monitoring him.”
The relative further told this publication that Johnson was having difficulty breathing and speaking.
When this newspaper visited the teen, who is a patient in the High Dependency Unit of the hospital, he complained of severe pains about the body.
Johnson was receiving oxygen, intravenous drips and a large tube was inserted in his abdomen to drain fluids from his body.
At the scene of Sunday’s shooting, a number of neigbhours said that Johnson was not “known by the police”.
Residents are convinced that Johnson, who they say was constantly targeted by the police, was mistakenly shot.
Kaieteur News understands that investigators have since revisited the scene and have taken statements from relatives and neighbours.
One relative said that the police yesterday told them that a file is being prepared and would be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.
The teen was shot on Sunday afternoon, by the police who reportedly mistook him for wanted man “Cobra”.
Reports reaching this newspaper stated that Johnson, of 707 East Ruimveldt was shot just as he walked out of his front gate.
Relatives had told this newspaper that Johnson had just finished eating when he told his mother that he was going to visit relatives.
One relative who witnessed the shooting said that Johnson was standing at his front gate, trying to open it when he was confronted by the police.
The police also arrested two young men following the shooting incident. The men, according to the police, are part of gang which is run by wanted man “Cobra”.
Police sources had told this newspaper that the two men and “Cobra’ were seen earlier in the area.
The source said that the two men who were armed with a handgun, opened fire at a police patrol.
The police returned fire at the two men and were able to capture them. However, wanted man “Cobra” was once again able to elude the police.
Unconfirmed reports are that the police recovered a gun on one of the suspects.
