Moen Gafoor is flanked by Carmichael (left) and Leon Belony (right) shortly after carting off the spoils in the Caricom open championships.
Moen Gafoor is on a roll. Earlier in the year he carted off the Independence Scrabble championships and followed up that win with a sterling performance in the Earl Vigilance Memorial championships where he once again out-spelt a formidable line up of players to win that tournament.
Yesterday afternoon Gafoor added yet another accolade to his bulging coffers when he won the Caricom Open Championships, organized by the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP), at the Chamber of Commerce building, Waterloo Street, South Cummingsburg. Gafoor amassed 5 games and a positive spread of 135.
Floyd Carmichael once again proved that he is a player to be reckoned with when he amassed a similar number of games as Gafoor but finished with a lower spread of 55. Leon Belony defeated Gafoor in the second round by a massive spread of 253 but did not sustain the momentum. He eventually occupied the final podium spot with 4 games and a positive spread of 541. Most of the players were at the top of their game and apart from Carmichael and Gafoor’s five games apiece, three players ended on four games and only the spreads really separated them.
Gafoor’s victims were Carlton Murray (47), Ulric Harris (29), Maurice Munro (123), Orlando Michael (80) and Carmichael (109). Carmichael’s loss to Gafoor occurred in the final game and proved to be instructive since a win would have handed the championship to Carmichael. Earlier, he had notched up victories over Harris (88), Nicholas Grant (10), R O Michael (10), Belony (29) and Colin Chichester (27).
The planning committee has not yet set a date for the next tournament but the executives will convene next Sunday for their second quarterly meeting. According to the President of GASP, Moen Gafoor, high on the agenda of that meeting would be discussions pertaining to a school tournament sometime soon.
