The small, but skilled contingent from Marian Academy showed the mini-tennis community that they are the overall best upcoming tennis players in primary school by winning two categories in a competition that featured 18 children that participated in the Guyana Lawn Tennis Association-organised Mini-Tennis Inter-school Competition which was played, at the National Gymnasium.
Seven schools participated in the day’s activity including Marian Academy, St. Ambrose, St. Agnes, Enterprise, Winfer Gardens, St. Margaret’s, St. Angela’s.
The competition was played in a round-robin format that was used to give the players an opportunity to contest many matches against participants from other schools and the number of matches won was used to determine the winner.
In the final results: Boys Under-10, Hemraj Resaul of Marian Academy defeated defending champion Anthony Grant of St. Angela’s Primary 3-2.
In the Boys Under-8 division, Vijay Sharma of Marian Academy def. Andre Chapman of St. Agnes Primary.
In the Girls Under-10, the promising 8 year-old Kalyca Fraser of St. Margaret’s Primary def. Jada Williams of St. Ambrose.
Marian Academy received the Trophy for Best School and Teacher Mariska Williams of St. Ambrose Primary who has maintained the programme from its inception, held on to the coveted title of Best and Most Committed Teacher by once again winning the teacher competition.
These prizes are awarded to the school and teacher who best adopts mini-tennis for their Physical Education programme in primary schools and performs well at competition. At the Closing Ceremony, President of the GLTA, Mr. Christopher Ram urged parents and teachers to ensure that physical and competitive activities are maintained for children since it contributes in a big way to their ability to focus and perform well in their academics. Chairperson of Junior Development, Grace McCalman also expressed her gratitude for the participation of the schools and reminded parents that the adoption of any sport is critical to foster discipline.
She encouraged teachers to adopt the program and request equipment as necessary to maintain or expand their programme.
National Junior Tennis Coordinator Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan, while disappointed at the low turn out, maintained her optimism about finding hidden talent in primary schools through competitions such as these.
