– will pay airfare for Texas Longhorns athlete
The Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) insisted that Guyana’s and University of Texas triple and high jumper, Devon Bond must attend the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Puerto Rico, believing his reason for initially opting out was minor.
Bond had previously opted off the national athletics team, thereby out the Games because of not being able to meet a criteria set out by the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) and GOA that the United States-based athletes must pay their airfare to Puerto Rico.
The agreement was that the US-based athletes were to pay their airfare to Puerto Rico since they were travelling from different States and the AAG and GOA would refund them fully when the team manager, Branford Burke arrives for the meet this month end.
However, Bond had written Burke to opt out of the event, citing his personal inability to meet the criteria because of his financial situation. The Olympic association believes, though, that should not prevent him from wearing the national colours of his country.
As a result, the AAG and GOA will find the necessary funding to purchase Bond’s ticket for him to compete in Puerto Rico. This development was related yesterday as many disciplines continue to fine tune preparations for one of the biggest meets in the region.
Bond will therefore join former Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Aliann Pompey, middle distance runner, Marian Burnett, sprinters Adam Harris, Gordon Mackenzie, Lee Prowell and locally-based distance star, Cleveland Forde in Puerto Rico.
