Father of two national junior table tennis players, Jamaal and Denzil, Donald Duff wielded his racquet to both the Over 35 and 40 titles yesterday in the Guyana Police Force (GPF)-sponsored Veterans’ Table Tennis Open Championships.
Watched by an enthusiastic crowd of luminaries, mostly, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Duff returned some brutal and entertaining slams and loops to outclass his rivals in the two categories on his way to winning $100,000 for the two titles.
He defeated Xen Goliah, whose simple game pressed him the most, 11-9, 9-11, 11-6, 5-11 and 11-3 in the Over 35 category, which was his only five set match of a final appearance. Patrick Triumph beat Bruce Murray 3-1 to claim the third place award. Duff returned in the Over 40 final to brutally dismiss Floyd Conway 11-8, 11-7 and 11-5 with Triumph beating Goliah 3-1 for third place. Triumph got his prime prize when he topped Murray 12-10, 11-4 and 11-0 in the Over-50 final of the competition.
Goliah won 3-0 against Munniram Persaud to claim third place in the Over-50. All of the players that placed in the top three of the three categories won handsome cash prizes for their efforts that Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene reportedly sponsored.
Among those present at the event yesterday was Georgetown Mayor, Hamilton Greene, Attorney-at-Law, Peoples National Congress Reform Parliamentarian, Basil Williams, Director of Sport, Neil Kumar and Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony.
