Police constable Vickram Baldat Beeram Singh, of Lot 522 Number 48 Village Corentyne who was slain on Friday night while on duty at the Joint Services Housing scheme was only working his third night at that location.
The young man, who was the second child of Nandkissoon Beeram Singh, a labourer, and Nadira Beeram Singh, had previously worked at the US Embassy.
According to his father, Baldat had always wanted to be a policeman, but the father was not very enthusiastic about this career choice.
“For some strange reason he always want to be a policeman. I was not too keen on him joining the police force. But he wanted to; he eventually joined up in town,” the upset man said.
Baldat was a former student of Tagore Memorial Secondary School and had a likeness for electronics.
He eventually attended the Skeldon Technical Institute and the No 66 Road Side Baptist Church where he did courses in Electronics.
A scarcity of jobs and his desire to become a policeman took him to Georgetown to enlist in the Guyana Police force on June 18, 2009. He had just finished Training School and was expected to be back in training in about two weeks’ time before he would have received his final posting.
His mother, Nadia, was inconsolable and kept saying that she must have justice for her child.
The family had received a call from someone at Police Headquarters Eve Leary around 22:30hrs, who informed the parents that their son had been shot and killed.
The woman stated that in Georgetown, they heard different versions on her son’s death. “They kept telling us different things and sending us from one person to the next.”
Amidst tears she said that she suspects that something is amiss and wants to know the truth.
The family described Baldat as friendly, simple and easy going. “He made regular visits home and would call as often as possible.”
Of late she said he would call about two to three times in one day. On the day he died he had called home around 17:30 hrs to enquire if every thing was okay.
He was waiting on his relief and told them he should be at his TSU Base by 20:00 hrs.
In fact, Baldat left his home on Monday last after coming home on Friday last. His mother said that she suspected that something was not right.
According to his father, after his son returned to work on Monday he was not given work on Tuesday. On Wednesday he was transferred from his Embassy postings to the place where he eventually died.
His mother said that her son kept calling home more frequently and complaining about his work. He was not particularly pleased that he was removed from his previous post at the embassy.
According to her he had planned to be home today.
Apart from his mother and father, Singh leaves to mourn his brother, Sohan Beeram Singh, 26, and Davendra Beeram Singh, 15, a student of Corentyne Comprehensive Secondary School.
The family is calling on the Home Affairs Minister and the President to investigate the matter and would like a meeting with either or both of them.
