Helena, Mahaica Primary School Boys and girls won over their respective opponents when the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport in collaboration with the National Sports Commission (NSC) staged an Inter-School softball cricket competition at the Mahaica Helena # 2 Cricket ground on Thursday June 24 last.
In the boys’ finals, Helena’s Primary batted first against Gibson Primary and scored 86 runs while conceding 7 wickets. Alvin Singh lashed 2 sixes and 3 fours in a top score of 45 with support from Gibson (44).
The best bowlers for the opposition were Stephen Patrick (2-12) and D Persaud (2-10). In reply, Gibson Primary could only muster 44 after Dhannarine Persaud took 2-12.
The girls then emulated the men, scoring 44-5 in response to Gibson Primary score of 43-9. Kenesha Beveney lashed 22 (3×4) to take the batting honours while S. Khan scored 11 not out to pilot their team to victory.
Helena’s Girls returned later in the day to compete in the 5 overs windball cricket competition but lost in the semi-finals, played at the National Park on Tuesday June 22 last.
Meanwhile, director of Youth and Sports, Neil Kumar handed out the prizes to the respective winners and commended the organizers for a well conducted tournament.
He also noted the efforts of the teachers, parents and the students in the organizational structure of the event.
The Director of Sports further urged the players to aim for higher goals while aspiring for a place on the Regional team. Mr. Kumar also disclosed that his entity, in collaboration with the National Sports Commission (NSC) would be hosting a school camp in the Mahaica area during the August holidays.
Several other individuals played key roles in the organization of activities and included Daniel Richmond, Latchman Yadram and Herman Persaud.
