Natural Science prevails
The Faculty of Natural Sciences defeated the Education Faculty last Friday in the finals of the University of Guyana Berbice Campus second Annual Inter- Faculty Debating Competition. There was high anticipation in the air over the past weeks as to who would have been crowned the champions, even as the event was postponed twice.

Debaters thrilled the audience in the UGBC auditorium during the spirited competition which revolved around the moot: “Be it resolved that the Sexual Offenses Act will not significantly reduce the incidence of sexual abuse in Guyana”.
The judges’ decision was not unanimous according to chief judge of the proceedings, Professor Daizal Samad. The other judges were Ms Kirsten Anderson, U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer in the area of health and Food and Nutrition, and Berbice Magistrate Mr Chandra Sohan.
Mr Sohan also spoke about the Sexual Offenses Bill and gave the audience as well as the debaters a synopsis of the Bill from judiciary standpoint.
The winning team comprised of: Ms Moniques Sookram, Ms Sonia Yacoob and Mr Joshua Bhudial while the runners- up were Ms Vanessa Cadogan, Ms Moira Thomas and Ms Vanessa Williams.
The best speaker’s prize was awarded to Ms Moniques Sookram. The winning team was awarded $15,000 and the other team $12,000. The best speaker walked away with $5,000. Each of the participants was given a Certificate of Participation by UGBC’s Culture Club, which planned and co-ordinated the event.
The proposing team, the Education Faculty, argued that the Sexual Offenses Bill, thus far, has not deterred persons from committing criminal sexual acts, especially with minors.
They proposed reformation for individuals rather than serving stiff time in jail for committing sexual offenses.
The Natural Sciences team argued that the Bill contains all the legal jargon and necessary clauses to place offenders before the courts.
