He has not decided what his profession will be as yet but there is a possibility that he will be eyeing a path in the scientific field. Twelve-year-old Tauhir Khan of 103 Earl’s Court, La Bonne Intention, East Coast Demerara, said that he plans to enjoy his vacation before preparing for secondary school in September.
The young Khan secured the second place spot for the country in the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA), making his parents Shazadh Khan, a Project Management Consultant, and Sabena Khan, a housewife, very proud indeed.
He is the second of the couple’s three children to have successfully completed the primary level of education at the ISA Islamic School in Georgetown. Two years ago Shahrazaed Khan, Tauhir’s elder sibling, made her academic mark when she secured fourth place in the country at the same examination, thereby setting the pace for her other siblings.
A younger sibling is currently attending the same primary school which, according to Shazadh Khan, “must be doing something right for my children to excel like this.”
The proud father said that although his expectations were high for Tauhir there was nothing extra done to force his son to excel. “He was naturally always brilliant. He always topped his class; in fact this term he got 99.2 percent.”
According to him, the only extra lessons that Tauhir attended ended up to 15:30 hours weekdays, four days a week and a few Saturdays. However, as NGSA came closer he revealed that Saturday lessons became more of a regular feature. “He had no curfew. His mother ensured that he ate the right foods and she helped him out a whole lot.”
According to the bold young man, there was not added excitement to writing the examination which lasted two days, “I did what I had to do and came out.”
He credits his success to unwavering support from his teachers including Ms Sabena, who taught him at the nursery level, and Ms Rabena and Sir Johnny. He will attend Queen’s College come September.
