Tutorial Academy Secondary School (TASS) overpowered New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary (NAMS) 41-24 to come out winners in the finals of the 12th Annual Hilbert ‘Old Beef’ Humphrey Memorial schools basketball competition which was played at the Vryman’s Erven basketball court in New Amsterdam.
After successfully negating their way through the preliminary and semi-finals stages of the competition, the two teams then met in the finals as TASS dominated their more illustrious counterparts to come away easy winners in the end. It was a total team effort from the winning TASS combination as no one player had a substantial amount of points for the winners.
At the presentation ceremony which followed at the end of the competition, TASS received the winning Hilbert ‘Old Beef’ Humphrey trophy and 10 gold medals while NAMS also collected a trophy and 10 silver medals. Jamal Felix of TASS collected a medal for being adjudged the MVP of the finals.
Five schools participated in the competition namely Berbice Educational Institute (BEI), Vryman’s Erven Secondary School (VESS), New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary (NAMS), Tutorial Academy Secondary School (TASS) and Canje Secondary School (CSS) and results of the preliminary and semi-finals games are as follows:- In the first encounter TASS won from NAMS 46-37.
VESS then gained a walk over from BHS who failed to show up for their encounter.
Day two then saw CSS beating VESS 39-20.
NAMS then got the better of BEI 29-27.
Day three action saw TASS winning from BEI 50-38 and CSS gaining a walk over from BHS.
In the semi-finals NAMS edged out VESS 24-22 while in the second schedule semi-final TASS got a walk over from CSS.
The tournament was coordinated By National coach Kirk Fraser and Neil “Grizzly” Humphrey.
