Turfites attended the Kennard Memorial Turf Club (KMTC) Phagwah Day Horseracing meet last March in anticipation of top class entertainment and after witnessing several exciting races between the nation’s top horses, felt satiated but still anticipated the next event of this nature.
The organizes ensured that the wait was not a prolonged one and come Sunday August 15, horserace lovers are once again guaranteed of similar excitement when the KMTC presents its Post August Day Race Meeting at the organization’s Bush Lot Farm Corentyne headquarters.
Seven races are carded for the day with the feature attraction being the race between the 3 year olds.
Horses bred in Guyana and the West Indies will face the starter for a first prize of $350,000 while the second place finisher receives half of that amount. The jockeys riding in third and fourth receive $87,500 and $44,000 respectively.
The C and Lower Class, will also cover a one mile distance and guarantees the winning jockey a grand first prize of half a million dollars and the second place finisher half of that amount. The third and fourth prizes are $125,000 and $63,000respectively.
Other races for the day are the G and H over a distance of 6 furlongs. The winning jockey in this race will cart off $170,000 while the second place finisher wins half that amount. The third and fourth place finishers receive $42,500 and $22,000, respectively.
The two years old would also be in action over 5 furlongs for a top prize of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars while horses in the J & K category will compete over seven furlongs for a top prize of one hundred and twenty thousand dollars.
Turfites could look forward to improved action especially since jockeys would be competing under improved track conditions.
Another plus is that a stable of well-bred animals will be on show including Annie’s Playmate, Sweet Sudden Charm and Jade (American bred) while locally bred horses include Sequin, World Class, Little Panie, Alphabet, Jumbo Joy, Laura Lee in Flight, Sir Balagie, Pinch de Cash, Shakira and Jumbo Joy.
With such a lucrative lineup, organizers are encouraging horserace lovers to come early and be a part of the action.
Meanwhile, organizers revealed that the event is being conducted under the rules of the Guyana Horse Racing Authority (GHRA) and that these rules would be rigidly enforced.
The registration period end on Saturday August 7 and horse owners can register their animals with Dr Dwight Waldron (645-2848, 220-6557 or 625-0100), Justice Cecil Kennard (226-1399, 225-4818, or 623-7609) or Roopnarine Matadial aka Shine (325-3192) or Ivan Dipnarine ((331-0316). Horse owners are also asked to have their animals examined by the vet by 11:00hrs on race day. (Michael Benjamin)
