A Linden woman is contemplating what to do to get herself out of her predicament.
According to the woman, 52-year-old Laverne Fraser, of 226 Blue Berry Hill, Linden, she has not worked for over a year now, because of health complications.
She said that at this time she has no source of income because no medical certificates were sent to NIS to facilitate processing of her benefits. Fraser said that this has caused her untold hardships and embarrassment, as she has financial commitments that she has not been able to meet, including a bank loan.
She was employed as a sanitation worker at the Wismar Christianburg Secondary School for 13 years. The woman said that she was diagnosed with diabetes in March 2007, and was subsequently hospitalised for five weeks; she couldn’t walk for three of those five weeks, she claimed.
After her discharge from hospital, she was mandated to visit the doctor every week in order to monitor her condition, as her glucose level was still not under control.
Fraser said that she was given a medical certificate, which she submitted to her place of employment.
She said that throughout the duration of her extended illness she was issued with medical certificates, which were collected by the secretary at the school.
It was therefore a huge surprise for Fraser when she turned up at NIS for her benefits only to be told, that no medical certificates had been submitted for her.
Fraser said that she immediately contacted the Regional Office, as she knew that all such documents are first submitted there and later sent to the NIS office.
However, personnel there told her that no medical certificates had ever been submitted on her behalf.
The frustrated woman said that after she was given ‘the royal run around’ one of the certificates was eventually found at the Regional Administration. There were also resumption forms.
Upon questioning the school’s administration about the missing medical certificates, Fraser said that she was told by the Principal, that he does not keep those things. Fraser questioned, “How can resumption forms replace a medical certificate?”
The woman said that she is convinced that the medical certificates had somehow been destroyed or misplaced.
She declared, “They better find my certificates; I have a child at school to maintain, and the interest on my loan is going up.”
NIS is depending on the submission of the medical certificates to start processing her claims, Fraser disclosed.
