An on-duty policeman was shot dead by two gunmen shortly after 20:00 hrs last night at the entrance to Lamaha Springs.
Police Constable 20740 Becram Singh, a 19-year-old Tactical Services Unit rank, was shot in the face, left side chest and abdomen, while standing sentry at the guard hut located near the entrance to the area, which is also know as the Joint Services Scheme.
He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Davis Memorial Hospital.
According to one report, Constable Singh was outside the guard hut when he saw two young men walking down Kaikan Street, North Ruimveldt, towards him, apparently with the intention of passing into the Joint Services Scheme.
He challenged the approaching men and one of them drew a handgun and opened fire, fatally wounding Singh.
However, in a press release the police stated that Police Constable 20740 Singh of the Tactical Services Unit was on duty at the entrance to the Joint Services Housing Scheme at Lamaha Springs, Georgetown, when he was shot and killed during efforts to apprehend the perpetrator of an attempted robbery which occurred in the vicinity of his post.
“Information was received that the rank observed the attempted robbery and responded when he was shot by an armed man who then ran away.
“A police patrol that was in the vicinity responded and gave chase in the direction where the assailant was suspected to have gone and several houses in the area were also searched, but the patrol was unsuccessful in locating him.”
Constable Singh was rushed to the Davis Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical treatment.
Kaieteur News understands that some female ranks from the East La Penitence Station were passing through the area in a vehicle when they heard gunshots and saw two men running.
A third man then approached the ranks and told them that a police rank had been shot.
They then went to the scene where they saw Singh lying motionless on the ground.
The ranks then took their colleague to the Davis Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police source said that the slain cop was armed with his .38 service revolver when the attack occurred.
As news of the brazen killing spread, several policemen converged at the hospital to get a last glimpse of their colleague.
Some police sources said that Singh had not yet graduated from training school.
Kaieteur News was told that an army rank, accompanied by a policeman, would usually perform sentry duty at the Lamaha Springs entrance.
However, no army rank reportedly turned up last night.
The killing is reminiscent of the spate of deadly attacks on police ranks during the height of the country’s crime wave.
