Former National Junior Champion, Taffin Khan rebounded from a first round loss to Karl Rapon of Martinique to defeat Barbadian Michael Barker, in the process avenging an earlier loss by his countryman Loris Nathoo to the same player on the first day of the tournament when play in the FIDE rated chess tournament continued at the National Stadium, Providence EBD yesterday afternoon.
Loris Nathoo was not so fortunate and after losing to Barker on the inaugural day, registered a second loss, this time to Trinidadian Hayden Lee. Shiv Nandalall, whose first day victory came at the expense of his countryman, David Khan, failed to replicate the feat and surrendered a game to Surinamese Romario Sanches.
Ronuel Greenidge also surrendered his game to Karl Rapon of Martinique moments before David Khan defeated his compatriot, Ryan Singh.
At press time the players were engaged in fourth round action and the details of these encounters would be published in a subsequent issue.
The local players are attempting to improve their current FIDE ratings against the overseas contingent, all highly rated FIDE affiliates.
The overseas players, all with lucrative ratings, are Karl Rapon (2024) of Martinique, Surinamese, Romario Sanches (1972), Barbadian Michael Barker (1729) and Trinidadian Hayden Lee (1856).
The local players are Shiv Nandalall, Taffin Khan, Ronuel Greenidge, David Khan, Loris Nathoo and Ryan Singh. Activities culminate on Monday, July 5.
