In fulfillment of the GYS 170:2003 standard, which is the general requirement for the operation of a medical laboratory, the Medical Laboratory of the Georgetown Public Hospital was on Thursday certified by the Guyana National Bureau of Standards.
At a simple forum, Director of the Medical Laboratory of the public hospital, Dr Pheona Mohamed-Rambaran, was presented with a Certificate of Compliance with the GYS 170 standard from Ms. Rodlyn Semple, Technical Officer 2, of the GNBS. This certification is a requirement of the Health Facilities Licensing Act of 2007.
The GPHC Medical Laboratory has been re-certified for seven consecutive years as it strives to maintain a Quality Management System which fulfills the requirements of the ‘GYS 170; 2003’ Standard. The GPHC prides itself as one of six Medical Laboratories in Guyana that has been certified.
According to a statement issued by the hospital yesterday, “this recent certificate highlights the commitment of the Laboratory to provide quality testing to their customers.
Moreover, it covers the Microbiology, Haematology including Blood Compatibility, and Biochemistry Sections of the Laboratory.”
Dr. Mohamed-Rambaran in receiving the certificate expressed her pride, and gratitude to her staff for their hard work, which according to her was the crucial factor which has led to the renewed certification of the laboratory.
She further challenged them to continue to implement and maintain the system. She also thanked Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, Mr. Michael Khan, for the role he has played in ensuring that the lab reaches the desired standard in order to obtain this recent accreditation.
This certification exercise was also attended by Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, who congratulated the team of laboratory staff for their efforts. He encouraged them to expand their scope of testing and he urged them all to continue to work towards achieving a centre of excellence.
