Central Police Operational Youth Club (CPOYC) defeated Guyana Fire Service (GFS) by 24 runs in a feature 20/20 softball cricket match which was played recently at the Rose Hall Estate Community Centre Ground in Canje and was sponsored by the Republic Bank New Amsterdam Branch.
Scores in the match were; Police operational Youth Club batted first and reached a challenging 90 in 16 overs with David Singh 23, Azam Khan 22 and Adnan Singh 17 being the top scorers. Bowling for Fire Service Kevin Edwards and Wilber Hope took 3 wickets for 27 runs each while Quesi Mentore picked up 2.
Fire Service in reply ran cold and were dismissed for 66 with Mentore returning to top score with 22 while Edwards contributed 16.
Bowling for the Police Youth Club Romel Ekland led the way with 3 wickets while there were two apiece for Khan and David Tana.
In the presentation ceremony the winning Police Youth club team were presented with the Republic Bank Trophy and cash incentive. Quesi Mentore of The Fire Service received a trophy from New Building Society for being the man-of-the-match. The best Bowler on show was Romel Ekland and he got a trophy compliments of Dipcom engineering while the best batsman trophy compliments of DDL went to David Singh both of Police Youth Club.
According to organiser Sergeant Jairam Ramlakhan, the main aim of the match, which is part of a series of games, was to launch a Sports Initiative Programme organized by the Police Force in Berbice to keep youths away from indulging in criminal activities and to become better citizens for the nation.
A number of dignitaries attended the games including professor Daisal Samad, Director of the University of Guyana Berbice campus, Republic Bank Manager Imran Saccoor, Divisional Fire Officer Bernadette Adams, Fire Service cadet Officer Haimchandra Persaud and Sergeant Jairam Ramlakhan coordinator of the Police Youth Club and coordinator of the police extension programme.
Over 200 school children of the Rose hall Estate and Cumberland Primaries schools were also in attendance.
Imran Saccoor expressed Republic Bank’s pleasure to be associated with an event of that nature since it serves as a means to bringing harmony amongst people of various disciplines and trust that the youths can see sports as a invaluable means of curbing the minds from ill practices which will ultimately redound to the benefits of good citizenship and help to build Guyana as a nation.
The school children received special Republic Bank Right Start Gift items, while teachers, parents and other spectators who were in attendance also received tokens.
