Dear Editor,
There is no doubt Guyanese are looking forward to elections they sense change, it’s logical they are part of it.
This change doesn’t necessarily mean that the incumbent will lose to an opposition even though that’s a possibility and those oppose to the PPP wants to see it go, some with a vengeance.
This can be expected after 18 years of one party rule, well it would be expected that this is change number one, term limits.
While there is no established coalition opposition, as the main players hash out their differences while seeking the leader all can agree on, the supporters should not lose hope but rather be optimistic this is also unique to Guyana.
Many in the political arena are getting on board or at least hoping to be part of this united party, as the people are assuming their needs and the country’s come before any personal agenda. The Diaspora have a lot of influence on those in their homeland should be an integral part of this campaign they undoubtedly will have to produce the technical skills in development.
Despite all the labels placed on the current government it was put there since 1992 by the people through free and fair elections and still retain the majority. Many question, why Guyanese vote the way they do, well it’s explained every day in the media by letter writers, columnists, bloggers etc., it may not be accepted but it’s understood (and hopefully it will change) especially by the ABC countries who are now showing some concern and are blaming the two major political parties. Guyanese people are being more vocal than before and from both camps, but mainly via the media who on the other hand feel it’s being muzzled by government, media do get the attention of observers.
It is the belief of some that the people in Guyana vote party rather than candidate that can be a fair assumption considering the past voting pattern except the past election showed some were willing to break that pattern and it could be expected again come next election.
This brings in to question the next PPP candidate with President Jagdeo out of the equation this leaves the few names being tossed around lately. PPP supporters can surprise their old party unless the Party come up with a bigger surprise and select a female candidate someone not tainted with the ethnic dominance but can appeal to the minority and represent the Indigenous people.
