The six boxers scheduled to compete in the Central American and Caribbean Championships scheduled to get underway in San Juan Puerto Rico from July 18 – August 3 have all received American visas to facilitate the trip and are scheduled to leave Guyana shortly for that American state.
They are flyweight, Dexter Jordon, lightweight, Clevon Rock, welterweight Devon Boatswain, featherweight Ray Sandiford, junior/lightweight Bert Braithwaite and Herlando Allicock. Vice President of the GABA, Maurice Rajkumar will accompany the team as the manager.
Coaches of the national team, Terrence Poole, Sebert Blake and Wensel Thomas are all confident that the boxers are capable of procuring lucrative medals at the games. Yesterday morning the squad visited the American Embassy and after their interviews were all granted visitors visas that sealed the deal pertaining to their participation in the tournament.
Meanwhile, the boxers shifted their training to the Sophia Training Centre, where they are currently encamped, and under the watchful eyes of Blake, Poole and Thomas, went through a rigid session on the heavy bag, speedball, skipping and calisthenics. This was after their morning sessions that comprised of several miles of tough roadwork along the East Coast corridor.
Poole told Kaieteur Sport that the coaching team is satisfied with the boxers’ all round performance.
He said that they are all focused and anxious to arrive in Puerto Rico to display their wares. Poole said that the training team is concentrating on lots of stamina work in the morning sessions and supports those sessions with technical work in the afternoons.
He said that the boxers are being taught the rudiments of attack and defence, two very important aspects of their repertoire.
Meanwhile, the team continues to receive support from corporate Guyana when Mike Singh of Mike’s Pharmacy donated vitamins for the boxers’ use.
The boxers are also receiving healthy meals, prepared by competent cooks with expert input from Dr Joseph Haynes, who is monitoring the process to ensure that the pugilists receive the right kind of nutrition.
Apart from Rock, several of the boxers have had international exposure and are confident of procuring medals. Allicock had been a member of the team that fought in Pune India while Sandiford participated in the last Olympics qualifier and was also a Caribbean champion.
