As race day quickly approaches, authorities of the Ryan Crawford Memorial Turf Club (RCMTC) of Alness Village Corentyne have ensured that all systems are in place for the grand season opener Horse Race Meet which is set for this Sunday, at the club’s track at Alness, Corentyne, Berbice.
With this being the first Meet of the second half of the season, the hype is truly on and so far over seventy (70) horses have taken entry in what is expected to be an exciting day of racing.
Eight (8) races are carded for the day with over three million dollars and trophies are up for grabs compliments of Banks DIH Ltd and telephone giants Digicel.
Four main events on the day’s card are planned with the C & Lower race which will be run over a distance of 1600 meters and sponsored by Banks DIH Ltd with a trophy and a first prize of $ 350,000.00, being the feature event.
A star studded field has been confirmed for this big event with the likes of Miss Republic, Miss Orientate, Annie’s Playmate, Delmur Gold, World Class, Sweet Revenge and The Message, all hoping to hold an early advantage in the second half of the season.
The co-feature three-year old event for horses bred and born in Guyana and the West Indies is expected to be as equally competitive as the ‘C’ class contest.
With a similar first prize of $350,000 and trophy available for the winner over a distance of 1500M, a keenly contested race is in the making.
Following the demise of Zionata, all eyes will be on the likes of Peaceful, Megan’s Choice, Jen’s Pride, Stormy Lass, Stormy Water, Five Star General and Celebration Time in what is expected to be a wide open race.
The E & Lower at 1400 meters with a trophy and first prize of $240,000 also has a star- studded field in the hunt for glory and among the runners will be Tropical Passion, Night Crescendo, Maracus Star, Mattarazzi, Madam Butterfly and Laura Lee in Flight.
There are two races for two-years old where the country’s top horses are making a grand entrance for the first time this year.
The organisers have also organized two separate races as they make an attempt to give all the new comers an even chance to compete.
The first for horses bred and born in the West Indies will see the likes of Better than Gold from the Jagdeo’s Stables, Sabrina’s Joy from the Jumbo Jet Stables and Irish Girl from the L. Singh Stables among others battling for the $200,000 winners’ cheque and trophy over 1000M.
The other race is for those born and bred in Guyana and they will compete over a similar distance for a top prize of $180,000 and a trophy.
Among the new comers taking to the track will be Apostle, Nordan, Wicked Intention, Ragh Baby, Big Driver, Water Wave, Royal Request, Speed Vision and Sweet Brotherland.
The G & Lower Sprint Classic at 1100meters with trophy and first prize of $160,000 and as always is an eagerly anticipated match-up with horses such as Pegasus Rising, The Gap, Royal Champion, Vanessa, Casino Royal, Stylish Line and Face De Music entered.
The ‘I’ & J Class event have attracted over twenty (20) horses, thus the organisers had to split the races in two categories.
There will be one race for ‘I’ Class horses open and another for I 3 & Lower for horses, who have not won in this class for the year.
The final race is for K&L class with the winner set to collect $80,000 covering a distance of 1200 meters.
The RCMTC have the reputation of being one of the fastest race tracks in the country and with major upgrading works recently completed on the facilities it is expected to be in tip top shape and fans can expect to view the events in absolute comfort.
