The greatest day yet in the history of Guyana was achieved last evening at the Guyana national Stadium when the ‘Lady Jags’ rebounded from a 1-0 loss to Cuba in Havana to defeat the Cubans 3-1.
Watched by a small but vociferous crowd at Guyana’s best sports facility the ‘Lady Jags’ showed great heart and determination to erase a 1-0 deficit to hammer the Cubans thus booking their way to the CONCACAF Gold Cup joining Canada, Mexico, the United States, Costa Rica, Guatemala and fellow Caribbean sides Trinidad and Haiti.
Cuba netted in the 35th minute via a Yezena Gallardo Martinez goal but the Guyanese responded with goals of their own off the boots of Captain Ashley Rodrigues in the 38th, Brittany Persaud (44) and Justine Rodrigues in the 48th minute.
Excellent goalkeeping again by diminutive Tenyka Francique who saved a second half penalty saw Guyana to its biggest win ever.
All and sundry were very ecstatic after the win, more details in tomorrow’s edition.
