Fresh from his scintillating victory when for the second time he managed to inscribe his name on the Earl Vigilance Memorial lien trophy at the Mackenzie Sports Club less than one week ago, top rated scrabble player, Moen Gafoor is well set to take the honours when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) convene at the Chamber of Commerce, Waterloo Street, South Cummingsburg to compete in the Caricom Open Championships on Monday July 5.
However, Gafoor can expect much sterner tests than those in the Earl Vigilance tournament since most of the top rated players that were unable to make the Linden trip will be competing in the upcoming tournament.
Whenever players the likes of Caribbean Champion, Fred Collins, National Champion, Abigail McDonald and James Krakowsky are in the lineup, the situation is always dicey and choosing a winner becomes an ordeal.
Throw in Yvonne Murray, Grace Hercules, Ruby Cummings and Floyd Carmichael and the battle becomes even more intense.
Recently President of GASP, Moen Gafoor commented that the rookies are now competing fiercely for a top ten ranking and the established players can no longer sit in their comfort zones and assume that they will retain those places.
Evidence of the improvement of the rookies is glaring when one notes the improved performances from Maurice Munroe, Michael Benjamin and Ruby Cummings among others. R O Michael has recently returned to winners’ row, placing second in the just concluded Earl Vigilance Memorial in Linden and has sent out a warning to the rated players that he is coming with a force for their positions.
How the situation pans out is anybody’s guess. One thing is an absolute; the tournament would be keenly contested and could very well boil down to the player with the most extensive vocabulary, wits and a bit of luck with the bag.
Players are urged to be at the venue by 09:30hrs for the registration period and a prompt start at 10:00hrs.
