Relatives of Lyndon Mc Curdy, 28, of Cane Grove, Mahaica, are pleading with the relevant authorities to properly investigate the circumstances in which he was shot by a police officer.
One relative yesterday told Kaieteur News that the young man, who sells sweets wholesale, was approached on Wednesday night by two policemen who informed him that he was wanted in connection with a stolen cell phone. Mc Curdy, according to the relative, told the ranks that he knew nothing about the item.
It was at this point that the lawmen allegedly placed McCurdy to lie face down on the road.
The relative further related that the police collected a gold ring and over $40,000 from Mc Curdy.
According to the relative, one of the policemen placed a gun to Mc Curdy’s leg and shot him twice to the knee.
The relative claims that after Mc Curdy was shot, the ranks took him to the hospital.
The police in a press release said that the circumstances of the shooting are not clear and the Office of Professional Responsibilities has launched an investigation into the matter.
The release further stated that McCurdy was wanted by the police for questioning into reports of simple larceny and threatening language, and acting on information, ranks proceeded to Coconut Dam where McCurdy was seen and arrested, during which he was shot to his left knee.
