The biggest match ever in the history of female football in Guyana is set for tomorrow at the Georgetown Football Club Ground (GCC) when the ‘Lady Jags’ battle Cuba in a must win game for the 8th and final place in the CONCACAF Gold Cup competition set for later this year.
Guyana lost the first game of the home and away tie to the Cubans in Havana by the lone goal of that encounter netted by Yezenia Gallardo in the 22nd minute.
The conditions endured by the Guyanese in Cuba was not the best and the ‘Lady Jags’ are not complaining but relish the opportunity to qualify for the Gold Cup in front of their home fans, making tomorrow’s game a must see for all.
Technical Director Mark Rodrigues has stated that the Motto for tomorrow’s clash is ‘One team, One goal, One victory to go.’
Guyana must win the game by at least 2 goals in order to book the final spot in the eight team tournament to join Canada, Mexico, the United States, Costa Rica, Guatemala and fellow Caribbean sides Trinidad and Haiti in the CONCACAF finals set for late October and early November.
Following the conclusion of the second round of qualifying in Trinidad and Tobago two months ago, Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti, Guyana and Cuba were scheduled to face each other with the top three teams advancing to the Gold Cup but that position was changed by the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) which said that T&T and Haiti were automatic qualifiers and Guyana and Cuba had to face off in a home and away tie for the final spot.
Barring the two local based players, the majority of the ‘Lady Lags’ who are based in Canada and the USA were expected to arrive in Guyana last evening and early this morning ahead of tomorrow’s all important clash.
TD Rodrigues said his charges are eager to face the Cubans again and to whip them as they seek to qualify for the Gold Cup and become the first Guyanese team (male or female) to ever achieve such a feat in the 100 plus year life of the sport.
Kayla De Souza who suffered a sprained ankle in the Cuba game after the Guyanese were forced to warm up on a concrete patch having been denied uses of the field due to rain is expected to play in tomorrow’s vital game. Rodrigues informed that De Souza who has been following Physiotherapist’s Michele Latimer’s instructions has been improving admirably.
Guyana has been very impressive to date in this qualifying campaign having lost to T&T and Cuba while defeating Suriname, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Barbados and St. Lucia in their other encounters.
The team spirit, yearning for success and hard work that has been put in by the ‘Lady Jags’ ever since they came together just over a year and a half ago will surely be on show tomorrow as they seek a history making victory over the Cubans.
TD Rodrigues is urging all Guyanese, male female, boy and girl to come out and support the ‘Lady Jags’ in their bid to bring further glory to Guyana.
Banks DIH Limited will be running promotions for the fans with Banks Beer and Coca Cola while the company will be setting up a Big Screen for fans to view the final quarter-final game of the FIFA World Cup South Africa between Paraguay and Spain.
Banks DIH Marketing Executive Carlton Joao: “We really want the fans to come out and support this team which has brought glory to our beloved country so we are putting systems in place to ensure fans don’t miss the World Cup action so we will be showing the game from start to finish at the GCC.
We value the support of our fans and so we want to ensure that they don’t miss the World Cup game but also come out to support our ladies in huge numbers tomorrow. There will be something for the young and old so come out and support big time.”
Meanwhile, the Cubans arrived in Guyana yesterday for the game and were caught during a practice session at the Camptown Ground, Campbellville.
The Technical staff did not speak much save and except to say that they are here to win, the words of Head Coach, Rufino Sotolongo.
October 1st turn off your lights to bring about a change!
