Following is a statement released by the Ministry of Culture Youth and on the passing of sporting icon, Kenneth De Abreu.
“On July 1, 2010 news emanating from the United States of America was a blow, provided a genuine shock to individuals, sports enthusiasts and sports administrators throughout Guyana.
The news was the death of Kenneth Ignatius De Abreu C.C.H.
In Guyana and especially amongst the sports fraternity, his death signals an irreplaceable loss.
Ken as he was commonly known was a true lover of sports and his country. His life was built around sports. He was involved in many sports disciplines, but excelled at Table Tennis, obviously his first love.
As a sport administrator, Ken served as President of the Guyana Table Tennis Association and on the executives of other associations including Weightlifting and Boxing. It is administrators of this caliber that Guyana so needs these days. Ken’s inspiration touched those with whom he worked but would not be available to the current generation of Sports Administrators, Executives and Managers.
He was a long standing member of the National Sports Council and was appointed Chairman of the National Sports Commission from its inception in 1993. Ken De Abreu can be described as being fair, dedicated and action oriented. It is said that if and whenever you wanted something done, Ken was the man.
Many, including the youth would have benefited from his commitment and dedication to sports.
Kenneth De Abreu also excelled at his work. He impressed his superiors and rose to the position of Director with the Beverage Giant, Banks DIH Limited.
Ken also served as the Chairman of the Interim Management Committee of Georgetown Mayor and City Council. He was relied upon heavily to properly manage the affairs of the Council which at the time was experiencing severe difficulties.
As Chairman of the National Sports Commission, he was a father-figure. He was overly supportive and shared of his knowledge and experience and never shirked responsibilities. His ample physical presence belied his soft heart, affable personality and ever-willing guide to the young and inexperienced.
At the National Sports Commission, none can forget his tremendous contributions to the development to sport in his homeland.
The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and National Sports Commission wishes to express profound condolences to his immediate and extended families, relatives, colleagues, friends and all those persons who were associated to this outstanding personality, Mr. Kenneth Ignatius De Abreu, a/k “Ken” De Abreu. May His Soul Rest In Peace.”
