Dear Editor,
As time draws nearer to our next general elections, tensions are growing high on both sides of the political divide.
The recent successes of coalition politics in the UK and most recently in Trinidad & Tobago are glowing manifestations that coalition politics works. This reality is enough to cause grave concerns among the ruling administration who through its various channels have expressed confidence that Guyana will be an exception to the coalition rule.
While each is entitled to his or her own opinion with regard to the success or otherwise of coalition politics, it must be given a try. The opposition forces must never rule out the option of working together to bring about the political change that is so desperately needed in Guyana.
Interestingly though, it is duly noted that the majority of the coalition naysayers all seem to come from one section of society that is aligned with the ideologies of blatant corruption, racial marginalisation and lawlessness. The proverbial poker face that is being produced by the various propagandists in the media, poorly disguises the real fear that exists within the corridors of power – that a well organised political coalition by the opposition can oust 18 years of incompetence.
Opposition parties need to be wary of severe and desperate attempts at infiltrating and destabilising them as the campaign pace picks up. Unfortunately, the ignorant and vulnerable who regrettably seem willing to sell their birthright to the embarrassment of themselves, their families and race will be either brainwashed or meagerly paid to mash up many a political gathering.
The recent upheaval at the National Library, where the ‘dark side’ of the political thugs sought to derail an academic presentation, signals the raising of the ugly head of a monster that will seek to divide and destroy the opposition as they seek to consolidate.
Opposition parties need to ensure that they stay clear of petty internal power struggles. They must present themselves as democratic, transparent and trustworthy organisations that can win the confidence of new voters while maintaining their current support base. Opposition parties need to stay clear from amending established constitutional rules and regulations to benefit or to maintain the narrow and selfish desires of a few.
Opposition parties must stand united and resolute repelling all attempts at sabotaging their image and that of their respective leaders.
There is untold strength in unity. A united opposition can destroy the 18-year cycle of oppression that has seized Guyana.
Richard Francois
