– newcomer, Bond still to verify place
By Edison Jefford
Amidst the furore over procuring the necessary funding to compete at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games scheduled for this month end in Puerto Rico, six track and field athletes have confirmed their attendance at the prestigious meet.
Kaieteur Sports was informed that quarter miler, Aliann Pompey, middle distance runner, Marian Burnett, sprinters Adam Harris, Gordon Mackenzie and Lee Prowell, all United States based, and Cleveland Forde have been confirmed to compete in Puerto Rico.
However, national newcomer, jumper, Devon Bond, also based in the US, has not yet confirmed his spot on the seven-man athletics team. Forde is the only locally-based athlete on the team with Branford Burke named as Manager for the July 23-30 event.
Many sport disciplines, the latest being women’s football, was forced to pull their participation at the event citing the old local bugbear of lack of funding. Athletics is not without similar concerns but the local association believes that the athletes must attend.
Speaking to President of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) Colin Boyce last evening at his office, it was revealed that the association has put up $350,000 to ensure that the athletes who were named, compete. The amount was part of a $1,081,000 shortfall.
Boyce said that the Guyana Olympic Association had put up 50 percent of the total amount that’s required for the team to attend. The other 50 percent amounted to $1,081,000 that Boyce said the association is yet to procure. He said they have requested assistance.
“We are hoping that the other 50 percent that we need will be covered. We have put up $350,000 of it so we hope that the rest will be covered. The Olympic association has a letter that we wrote to them telling them of our position,” the AAG head indicated.
Boyce informed that the Olympic association is the facilitating all negotiations for funding at the Governmental and corporate levels. He noted that they have worked out a system to have athletes pay their fares, following which they will be reimbursed.
According to the AAG President, Burke will repay all the overseas-based athletes in Puerto Rico since it would have been difficult for the association to look at flights for them out of the various States in which they are located in America.
He said the last update was that all the athletes except Bond had agreed to the deal, anticipating a full reimbursement in Puerto Rico. Boyce said that he is awaiting word from the Olympic association on their efforts to secure funding for track and field.
