Berbice High School exact revenge on old nemesis Vryman’s Erven Secondary school, whipping them 5-2 to come out winners of the 12th annual Hilbert ‘Old Beef’ Humphrey annual memorial school football competition which was played recently at the All Saints Scott Church ground, Princes Elizabeth Road New Amsterdam.
The competition which was played from Monday June 21 and concluded on Friday June 25 saw six schools participating with the schools being divided into two groups with Group A comprising of Vryman’s Erven Secondary School (VESS), Canje Secondary School (CSS) and Berbice High School (BHS), While Group B was made up of Berbice Educational Institute (BEI), New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary (NAMS) and Tutorial Academy Secondary School (TASS).
Each team in the respective groups were required to play each other once with the two top teams advancing to play the top two in the other groups in the semi final play offs.
Results of the games played are as follows:
Game one saw VESS and BHS playing to a 0-0 draw.
In game two TASS hammered NAMS 4-0 with Cleroy Joseph, Alain Henry, Deny Henry and Ronaldo August scoring one each.
Game Three was not played as VESS gained a walk over from CSS.
In game Four TASS again was on the rampage this time with a 4-1 drubbing of BEI their goal scorers were Cleroy Joseph, Alain Henry, Jermain Henry and Shem Bovell.
Game five was not played as CSS again failed to show up for their encounter this time with BHS.
Game six saw BEI winning against NAMS by default after NAMS fielded a player that was attending another school.
Results of the semi-finals; Group ‘A’ winners BHS scraping past Group B runners Up BEI on penalty kicks (3-0) after the game ended 0-0 following full and extra time.
In the second semi-final, Group ‘A’ Runners-Up VESS were able to eke out a hard fought 1-0 victory over Group B winners TASS by a Delroy Bullen goal.
The final then saw BHS banging arch rivals VESS 5-2 as they demolished their old nemesis and took sweet revenge for their recent lost in the goodwill tournament.
On target for BHS were Xavier Fraser, Devon Reece, Graham Thomas, Desmond Edinboro and Colwyn Andrews while VESS response came off the boot of Ron Lyken with the other coming through a defence error. At the presentation ceremony which was done immediately after the final, BHS was presented with the Hilbert ‘Old Beef’ Humphrey trophy and 15 gold medals for coming out winners while runners up VESS received a trophy and 15 silver medals.
The individual prize winners were – Best Goalkeeper Joshua Drakes BHS; Best Defender Shaun Edwards BHS; Best Midfielder Ron Lyken VESS; and Best Striker Xavier Fraser also of BHS. They all received a jersey, a short pants and one pair of hose from the organisers for their outstanding performances.
The presentation was done by members of the Humphrey family including former national player Keith Humphrey.
The competition was coordinated by former national player Neil “Grizzly” Humphrey and former Berbice player Nigel ‘Bus it’ Felix.
