A small but vocal crowd was on hand to witness Batavia Warriors emerge victorious over Demerara Distillers Limited when play in the Bartica Zone of the Essequibo Islands 10/10 Soft ball cricket competition continued in Bartica over the past weekend.
DDL batted first and scored 80-7 in 10 overs with Ayube DeFreitas (32) taking the batting honours. Batavia Warriors then lashed off the required total in just 5.4 overs without conceding a wicket. Avesh Heeralall (37) and Alvero Da Costa (30) remained unbeaten for the winners.
Bartica Super Kings then destroyed Orient XI by 51 runs after winning the toss and opting for first strike. Mahesh Richards (97) fell just short of a century but piloted his team to an enterprising 131-5 in 10 overs. Shastri Mangal (2-11 from 2 overs) then restricted Orient XI to 80 -5 in their 10 overs. Glen Federicks (19) and Damien Daniels (17) were the next best scorers.
Other results are as follows: Punishers XI made light work of Agastash XI by 9 wickets; Bartica Super Kings lost to Batavia Warriors. Batavia Warriors returned later in the day to chalk up their second victory over Punisher XI (who drew the bye to the final) by 57 runs.
Meanwhile, the teams competing for honours in the finals scheduled to get underway this Sunday in Wakenaam have expressed confidence in being victorious.
The organisers are also pleased by the show of support of the fans as well as members of the corporate community.
They are especially thankful to Banks DIH, GNSC and Western Union for their chivalry. Mr. Ronald Griffith of R.M.G Business Enterprises also came in for commendations fort he support rendered to the tournament.
Meanwhile, in the Essequibo Coast zone sponsored by Rohan Auto spares; Medina Halaal Restaurant; Paul’s Importers and Distributors played recently, Uplifting XI made light work of Better Success XI by 7 wkts in a high scoring match.
Better Success XI won the toss and batted scoring a challenging 152-8 in 10 overs (Navin Ramrattan 56; Pooran Lall 54; Fizul Hassan 2-25 from 2 overs) In reply Uplifting XI showed just why they are so highly regarded by scoring 156-3 in 8 overs (Fizul Hassan 46 not out; Ishwar Lall 44; Navin Ramrattan 2-39)
Richmond Youths gained a walkover from Young Guns who failed to show.
The competition continues this weekend with other first round matches in the remaining three zones as well as the female category beginning this Saturday.
